The Silky Terrier was developed around the turn of the century in Australia from crossings of native Australian Terriers and imported Yorkshire Terriers; the Silky Terrier has the best qualities of both breeds.

After WWll the popularity of the silky in the United States led to AKC recognition in 1959. As America became involved in the breed the name was simply changed to the Silky Terrier.
