All dogs should be taught basic rules of conduct: they should be house broken and taught to obey simple commands such as NO, Come, Quiet, Sit and Stay. It is also important for your dog to know how to walk on a leash.
You must confine your puppy to a specific area, not just run freely about. No puppy will soil his bed unless ill or confined for too long a period of time. To train him it is important that the place you want the puppy to relieve himself remain a little odorous in the beginning to help with the initial training.
Outside he will select a spot for himself. Be sure to reward your puppy each time the puppy has done his business in the proper spot. These dogs respond very well to praise rather than punishment.
Be sure to discipline your puppy or dog during or immediately after he has committed the wrong act, otherwise he will not know what he is being scolded for and it will only confuse him.
After your puppy has learned to walk on a leash, be sure that he knows who is the boss (and it had best be you!). Realize that training is a repetitious process. Your silky will want to please you be sure you are consistent in your training of him.
If you enjoy working with him you may consider an obedience training (about 8 months) or entering him in a dog show if he is of particularly good quality. This can be done at six months of age.
